Hi all. Yesterday, I took a long drive in my '28 (110 miles) to shake things down before South Lake Tahoe. Great day!

At the last stop along the way, I looked at the engine (while running) and noticed crankcase smoke and some oil belching out from two small holes on the driver's side of the block. Below are pictures of the holes.

What are these holes used for and should they be plugged up? I searched through the "School's in Session" book, but did not see these holes mentioned.

The hole are for a screw that hold the oilpipe inside the engine

Thanks, Bluezone. I will drop the oil pan and see what's going on. At the very least, I suspect that the screw's threads need some sealing compound.

One more thing to take care of before August 7th.

Those two screws are critical as it "aims" the oil at the connecting rod. I would not run the engine without them.

My comment above is not entirely correct. The oil is not targeted at the rods, but directed into one of the 4 troughs that the rods strike, and splash lube to the remainder of the engine. The effect is the same but the description was off base.

Problem solved. Lo and behold, both of the oil tube brackets and their respective bolts are missing! No wonder smoke and oil were coming out of the holes (see pic below).

Luckily, I have a set of these brackets that came out of a '28 engine that I scrapped a while ago.
