Can anyone tell me what type of wood was used in the framing of a 1927 Chevrolet. I need to replace a few pieces around the roof and would like to try and use the right type of wood. THANKS!!

This subject comes up periodically and deserves reviewing. The general consensus has been that the factories used whatever suitable hardwood was available in the local area. Typical choices were white oak, red oak, ash, hickory, etc. For the West Coast I have found suitable white oak at Central Valley Hardwood, Lamont, CA and Spar Marine Lumber, Long Beach, CA. The wood is clear, free of knots and for the amount needed not all that expensive.
Quality power tools are required and I try to duplicate the original joinery. Generally speaking you should USE NO GLUE.

Hi guys I have a number of photos of a sectioned 28 sedan that was built for the 1928 motor show with this body was a legend for the various timbers used in its construction .
1 Coachwood
2 Queensland Maple
3 Pacific Maple
4 Cudgerie
5 Southland beech
6 Alpine ash
7 Japanese Beech
8 Oregon

Golly Jim,
I always wanted a Didgeridoo made of Cudgerie but I hear the Eucalyptus ones are more termite proof ?? Google says Cudgerie is Pink Poplar.
There's also supposed to be a 28 Sedan split in half hanging on the side of a barn near Three Rivers, CA but I haven't found it yet.

Hey Herb, if you would like I will send you the photos ,in 1931 this body was given to the University here in Sydney for teaching purposes by General Motors. All the timber is numbered according to the legend listed ,which basicly shows you which pieces really didn't matter all that much as you said in your 1st post
