How do you clean this air filter I am trying to win on ebay. Do you clean it with gasoline or do you buy new insides. Also are these good filters to use on a 235? Thanks...Oscar

When the air filter was new it had a mesh that could be cleaned with a solvent (gas) ,the mesh reoiled and used over and over again. Not sure what the seller replaced the mesh with but from my picture it looks almost like he used a late model paper element. While this is a big improvement over the oiled mesh it would be considered not original. My choice would be the correct optional oil bath air cleaner.

Hi Oscar,

The Filling Station has repo copper mesh filters for for the air filter housing you are looking at for $25.

Gene....have you ever seen or heard of filter media for this style air filter that looks like felt? Also had someone tell me it was "cactus hair". A few years back when i bought my 48 it had the small flat air cleaner on it like the one on ebay and it had that feltlike material in it. Needless to say, its not on the car any more......I don't know how any air got through that stuff.

Oscar, if the ebay auction doesn't work out for you and you still want that style air cleaner, send me a PM or regular email. The one I have is in real nice shape ( been cleaned and painted). You would have to get a mesh element from Filling Station for it.

I may be missing something here but that looks like an original metal mesh to me.

The filter media was either brass or steel like metal. The exception would be in 1952 ,due to the Korean war, they used a straw like material.

The screen over it looks as if it would be paper. The original was not a screen but a thin piece of metal with round holes in it.The fact that the seller says he replaced the element raises doubts..where would he find the proper element.

The filter on ebay is not a proper filter for any Chevrolet below 1958 for sure, the paper filter as shown was not available then.

I've had originals with two types of elements. One with the holes such as Gene describes, like perforated metal. Another with the style shown in the auction, like expanded metal sheet. All of them had that steel colored filter element as shown in the auction, like a kitchen scouring pad. I know the repro elements sold by the vendors have a copper element, but I've never seen a copper original. A few NOS elements have shown up on E-Bay from time to time.
I really like the looks of them, but I have a hard time thinking they did much more than keep corn cobs and small pets out of the carb, even when oiled properly. An oil bath would be a much better choice for something that will see some road time. Just my 2 cents.

Bob

Ok it looks like brillo pads behind some expanded metal. I just know I have never seen one of these on any Chevrolet car or truck from 1958 back. It may be some hotrod or J.C. Whitney aftermarket job.

The paper is the white material behind the screen.

The ebay seller makes it clear this filter is for a truck. Nonetheless I have to ask..... I presume this filter is NOT correct for Chevy cars of the same vintage. Right??

Thanks guys.

Bill.

The truck uses the low filter. It is only a filter and (back-fire) flame arrestor.
The car uses the tall filter which is all of the above plus a SILENCER.
The truck filter does not eleminate the sucking noise when you accelerate.
I have a truck oil bath that I tried on my "34 car...it sounded like driving with no filter, was really noisey.

My 50 Fleetline had the oil bath filter with this straw like stuff in it. THere was three flat donut like layers coverd with a flat fine mesh. I tried to clean the filter with Varsol. The suff just turned to a messy pulp. Took me a while to find the replacement stuff. Had to hunt threw many air cleaners to find three good layers.

Yes, more of the oil baths had the straw. Its best to let the oil thats in the bottom splash up and self clean them or if they get real dirty used mineral sprits or kerosene.

Oscar what carb do you have? if it is the one with the intake that the filter clamps onto or is it different, how about a picture of the carb mounted on the truck? If you have the 54 Rochester one barrel carb either eBay filter should work if they aren't rusted out inside where you put the oil, and the clamp and clamp screw are in good shape, you can't tell from the picture.

The upper air cleaner on ebay for 1953-54 looks like the correct on for a TRUCK-not a car.

The lower one looks like one for a 1939-48 car.

The picture angles make ID not 100 percent.
