I have waited all day for someone to mention Pearl Harbor. I guess the younger generation is more concerned with "OneLiners"and who got their G&D first. REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR ! ! !

I can't say that I remember, as I was a mere four months old at the time, but I do remember the sirens and church bells four years later.

Interesting book on the subject written in '92 after
50 years when the material was declassified..Pearl Harbor - Final Judgement by Henry Clausen. But, to keep this on Chevs, if you watch the footage of the attack shown frequently on Dec 7th , you'll see a nice '41 Chevrolet convertible. Some one should stop frame this and put it on the chat room...

Yes I thought about it when we put all our flags at half mast.

...then I took a close look at all the Honda's, Toyota's and Nissan cars in the parking lot!

If anybody in the world wants to understand the true character of the United States, all they have to do is look at how, after being ruthlessly attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor, it did not exact vengence by bombing the entire country into A-bomb oblivion when it had the upper hand, but instead graciously accepted that country's surrender and worked to ensure Japan's place in the world as a participant rather than as a colony of the United States.

Being born in early '42, I don't know any of 12/7/41 first hand.

I've been to the Memorial @ Pearl on Oahu and it made be shudder. Nearly rocked me to my knees. I even cried thinking of my father who died in Sept '45 in the service.

And then skipping ahead, like RG said, seeing Hondas and Toyotas and Nissans all up and down I-5 today driving parents to visit a brother who's recovering from knee replacement surgery. As far as I'm concerned I'll sure as hell never buy a new one. (Car; not knee.) I'd buy a used one; but not a new one. Probably doesn't even make any difference. May well be made in USA while a Chevy could be made in Mexico or Canada. I guess it's just the idea of it.

Frankly, the whole freaking thing is too complex for simple old me. What I do understand is I love my old Chevys and most other folks old Chevys also!

Bill.

Well said Bill.

About ten years ago my wife bought a Toyota Camry. We had it seviced time and again at that dealership. The kids behind the service desk would call my work and add more and more services every time it was in there. Every bill was over $400 and there was no negotiating with them, the atmosphere was very matter of fact and seemed deliberate. (well this has to be done now or else). You have to wait in a living room setting with leather couches and fresh flowers. I hated going there and most of all, you better hang on to your wallet.

Meanwhile with my Blazer at the Chevy shop the floors are greasy and the service dudes bend over the counter to show you what they are going to do. They work with ya to get ya out of there and save ya some bucks. You hang out with the service writers and chew the fat about old cars and the new Vettes.

Kinda the way like it! chevy

Well, that is also the case with Bayer Chevrolet here in Comanche. The same type of operation as yours RGwiz.

My wife always hated the cars I bought for her, so I got smart in '87 after 25 years of marriage and told her to select her own car. She chose a Toyota Camry which now has 175000 miles on it. She's never griped about it and I'm more that pleased with it. I service it myself doing the routine stuff and send it to an independent shop when I find something I don't know how to do. During all those years, it's visits to the shop have been few unlike my '01
American car which was out of service for long periods of time. The dealer did provide me with a similar loaner car, as I remember, 5 times...After about 2 years, the company got if fixed finally and since then I've had no trouble. Oh! I forgot to say that the Toyota uses only 1 quart of oil in 3000 miles now...

Interesting to read of others experiences.

All kinds of different ones.

I guess that really is what makes the world go round.

Like I said, "it's all too complex for me."

I just buy used cars. I try to check 'em out the best I can and hope for the best. It's actually worked pretty well for me all my life.

Bought one new car in 69 - Bonneville coupe with 425 engine. Nice car. I was shocked to find it had 'little things' wrong - just like a used car - and the dealer never could (did) fix all of them.

That definitely "cured" me of the 'need' for a 'new' car. Even more so now when a 'nice' new car costs what $30 or $40k??? NOT for me!!

But for others??? Who knows. We all have our 'needs' and 'preferences' and etc. etc.....

Bill.

Me too, Bill. The wife buys new, I buy the low mile one's that just came off a three year lease.

PDX, I'm a fair guy and have to say that the '98 Camry had 98.5K miles with the original battery. The services that it needed I would not do myself, because they involve timing belts, intake manifold cleaning and replacement of sensing modules. Most of these things fell under the warranty my wife bought. Toyota's "or else" policy was mentioned so many times that I just would not attempt anything myself.

RGwiz, All '98's are a lot more complicated than our '87. On my '01, I tried to flush the coolant, but there's no radiator cap. And, to follow the book is a job that so far, I haven't done. My hands and tools are just too big for the cramped engine compartment..And, at 100,000 miles, I took the Toyota to the shop and had the belts changed, and replaced the water pump while we were in there. No way was I going to try that.

We bought a new '63 Belair V/8 a short while after we were married and had very good luck with it except it didn't start the best in real cold weather. Think we got about 198,000 out of it with a lot of the miles on rough gravel roads. Bought used cars of all makes since then with good luck and then in '96 we bought a new lumina and a small V/8 silverado. The first has 134,000 miles on it and the other 156,000 miles on it. Except for battery, brakes, & tires on each and the air conditioning and shocks on the lumina and electronic 4 wheel drive on the Silverado, that one under warranty, I can't complain very much. They ride nice but not like your very expensive ones. The service at the garage is also great. They sure start a lot nicer in sub-zero weather. I guess I'm still a chevy guy.

I think I'm a fairly wise person because I'm smart enough to realise I'm not too bright.

My wife bought a new Nissan Maxima while I was "out of service" last year; since day one her headlights were 'off,' one was ok but one was out of alignment. I went to the dealer a few weeks ago and talked with everyone and found out that the headlights CAN NOT BE ADJUSTED, PERIOD.

The manager told me that quite a few people have the same problem and he hopes Nissan is going to solve it!!!!!

Give me an old Chevy that I can adjust the headlights on anytime.

Hey Gator:

You don't really expect your wife to drive an "old Chevy" for her grocery getter, every-day driver, etc. do you??

Good luck, if you do!!

I saw an interview on SPEED the other day and these guys were talking about how Toyota is developing a sub chassis for THE WORLD WIDE MANUFACTURING MARKET.
In short, they plan to supply all auto makers with one platform to mount to.

...buy your Toyota stock now!

Hey PDX, you just may have the oldest Camry around!

I've never seen one older than that and still on the road.

Now that I think of it, I've never seen one at an old car show or even parts at a swap meet!

...mmmm, do you think the'll become collector's items? devil

Maybe I should have kept my mother's '59 English Furd for my wife???

Only new vehicles I (except my wife's Nissan) have ever gotten was a '68 Pontiac Lemans and a '74 Chevy pick-up everything else was 'used'.

Computer controlled highlights…give me a break Nissan….

my father and uncle bought new pickups in 1988. chevy 1/2 tons and the only things to go wrong with both of them is the head gasket rotting out, flooding the #7 cylinder with water and the transmissions going out. the trannys had over 265000 miles on them. fixed the pickups and we still drive them daily. we had a little toyota celica and evry month it was in for service. eventually we sold it and bought a chevy caprice. another very good vehicle. of course, for daily transport i drive my volkswagen. it has been good to me and only needs slight tweaking like valve adjustment every 2000 miles, and points(frequently). 20 bucks fills the tank and it lasts 3 weeks, so itdoes good.
