On the national news tonight there was a story on how China is making everything from sneakers to space rockets and airliners....and about how educated they are (325,000 engineers a year, 5 times us) and that more of them speak English then us and how many autos they are making and selling in Asia.

The surprise for me was in 2007 China will be allowed to sell cars/trucks here in the U.S. with their dealerships...as if we were not already sending them enough of our money now....trade deficit with them will hit new highs.

I for one will not be buying a vehicle from China….and yes I check to see where the other things I buy are made before I buy them today…however it is getting to the point of everything out there is being made in China.

Sort of reminded me of what Marx (Karl not one of the brothers) said about us;

"Capitalist will sell us the rope with which we will hang them"

Our government has sort of changed their attitude about dealing with communist...

All of the above is IMHO, and like belly buttons all of us have one (opinions).

The Chevrolet Equinox engine is made in China. Even a Chevy isn't a Chevy anymore.

Greg, Maybe an Equinox isn't what we would consider a Chevy? And I also heard what surprised me, and I never expected to hear. GM is a 40% risk for going bankrupt? Probably connected with their global-trotting?

Bottom line is that we have 'forgotten' that one of the main objectives of China and all communist governments are to destroy capitalism and democracy. Or have we convinced ourselves that they are nice guys now and we can trust them?

The old one-liner comes to mind; “Trust, but keep your power dry”.

Hello All,

I remember in the late 70's or early 80's going to the GE plant in Erie, Pa. where they made Locomotives(train engines).
It was a celebration because the first two locomotives, of an order of twenty, were completed and shipped to
china.

The celebration did not last long. Upon receiving the two engines the Chineese canceled the remaining order.

It was later learned that they used our parts to make their own locomotives. We just provided the know-how.

But I will still pay $70. for a jack as opposed to $700. for the same jack. (quality being equal)

GM is now suing China over an exact duplicate Chevy car they are making and selling, it is so exact that all of the parts including the body parts can be used on the Chevy, even the doors; only the name is different.

The cost to the rest of the world because of Chinese knock-offs is over $250 billion a year; they copy everything and anything they want (software, music, movies, computers, planes, trains, watches, TVs, etc, etc…) without paying any copyright or patent fees. They even make knock-off prescription drugs. mad mad

I need to stop watching the national news; it is all bad news. :( :( :( :(

I make it a solid point to check EVERY label, and ONLY buy American where US products are still made - clothes, boots, hand tools - and REFUSE to buy anything made in China unless it's absolutely unavoidable (so far, that's computers and TV's). There are a few websites that identify US manufacturers, and I recall several postings a while back on this website that gave out other websites which calculated US autos had at least the highest percentage of American-made parts.

The other important action to take is to avoid spending ANY money with retailers who heavily sell Chinese made products.

Heck, while I'm on a roll... :) ...it's also great to make the effort to buy local meat and produce from local farmers, and skip the cheap but tasteless stuff in the supermarkets.

Don't I "just love a bargain", or "everyday low prices"? Sure I do, but not at the expense of a fellow American worker. I'm pleased to pay a lot more to help him/her keep a job.

"That" post Skip is referring to is about as far from 'good taste' as anything I've ever seen in here.

If it ever was, it certainly isn't funny anymore.

Hay Ray!

Don't take this personal like tinman. Some of us men of substance sometimes make a mistake that is why we are men of substance. "That which is real"!
I'm am so looking forward to Colorado and you rosy cheeked boys. I want to examine your nails for grease.
I still don't think you work on your own cars.

Your just a bunch of girlymen!

Still watching the national bad news and they have reported that because China has so much of our money that we (our government) is going to start borrowing money from them....wonder what interest rate they will charge us...

Looks like they have learned how capitalism works very well. Guess they can copy more than we expected.

Per Bill's note, I was offering in the earlier post about a general philosophy that gets back to cars, GM, and Chevrolet in particular. Every dollar spent on American made cars and goods, AND to those who sell them, is one more dollar that goes to an American manufacturer and an American worker. Just keep Margaret Mead's comment in mind about the effect of actions from a determined few.

This also includes reproduction parts, materials, and restoration goods. Next time check the manufacturer of origin on a can of paint, a spark plug, a distributor cap, etc. You send a distinctive message to the retailer and the manufacturer when you read "Made In China", you hand it back, and say "I'm not going to buy it, then. I'd rather go without."
