In his latest "adventure", Boyd Coddington finds an absolutely beautiful 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air stored in a garage. Everything on the car works, the interior is mint, the tires are wide whitewalls, the car starts up immediately and the 6-cylinder engine runs like a dream. In short, the car is ready for "go and show" just the way it is. Coddington pays $25,000 for the car (the price tells ya right there what a nice car this is) and takes it away to his hot rod shop. :(

Once at his shop, the crew totally dismantles and guts out the car, removes the paint, and throws away the complete drive train and the interior. Then the "fun" starts. They cut off the front portion of the frame to prepare it for a new front clip, and then they cut the entire roof off so that the car can be made into a roadster. When completed the car will be a low rider with a big block engine and wide whitewall tires.

The comment was made during the program that even though Boyd Coddington gets static from car dudes about ruining all original cars, "mint original cars are easier to work with and to make into street rods". And, as they also said on the show....."that's what original cars are for!"

The funny thing is that Boyd Coddington has been into cars for decades and throughout the show Boyd and his crew kept calling the car an Impala.....even though it said "Bel Air" on both front fenders! DUH! mad mad mad

The show will be continued next week, so tune in and watch how a mint original Chevrolet is turned into a low rider! :( :(

I fortunately haven't had the pleasure of watching it yet, at least not for another half hour, but I thought that the car butcher Boyd would have gone down a while ago. His cars aren't even the slightest bit appealing! What a SICK HISTORY DESTROYER! If somebody gave that guy the holy grail, he'd probably alter and ruin it!

If ya don't own it, ya can't control it !

This is a good reminder to VCCAer's to try and sell a car to a known restorer and not a hot rodder. Of course, you can't blame a guy that's offered a ton more money from Boyd than the antique hobbiests are willing to pay. :(

I think the guy he is making the car and bike for asked Boyd to make it into a "Roadster" so it is even worse...making a 2 door-post into a convertible...

Did the '59 convertible use a different frame like the '57? Wonder how much of a 'flex' the '59 will have???

JYD, did you notice how quick all of the original parts (motor, tranny, front clip, etc) disappeared when Boyd said the workers could have them? Now they are trying to get some of them back...LOL

Hey guys;

I just sent Boyd an email asking him to stop destroying restorable cars and to try and restore one that he finds in the woods like we do. I included my VCCA # and my email address.
I suggest you guys do the same. Just do a search for Boyd Coddington and pick the first choice. It's his web site.

Gator: Ya, I saw how quick the parts disappeared and then Boyd's right hand idiot had to go all over the shop and try to find the parts that they needed..like the core support. He finally found some of the parts in the back of one of the employee's pickup.

At the beginning of the show they were talking about chopping the roof and then making the car into a roadster. When they did cut the roof off, they did leave short pillar posts like they were going to chop the roof. At any rate, tune in next Friday for part two of the episode and see what happens to the roof.......and the rest of that poor '59 Chevy....or what's left of it! mad mad mad mad

I watched the show once -- when he destroyed a complete, original, running Model T ****. It was like watching someone scrape paint off an Old Master painting to reuse the pigment.

Soooooooooooo, what channel (network ??) does this program air on???

I have seen it a few times in the past; but I guess I just bumped into it while 'surfing.' I haven't seen it for several months.

Maybe it's NOT on in PDX, OR..... (????)

Yep, it's on in Portland. On the "Dish" network, the show is on the Discovery channel (182) each Friday evening at 7:00 PM west coast time. :cool2: wink laugh laugh laugh

I think 'Discovery' is Channel 7. You must have 'digital' or something. My numbers don't even go up to 182.....

I'll check it out next Friday. But I think I used to see the 'replays' or whatever you'd call them.

Around Midnight or something like that.....

"DISH NETWORK"! That means that I have a satellite dish so the channels are different than cable or regular TV since with a satellite dish you get a zillion more channels.

:( If I wasn't so mad, I would probably have cried through the whole program!!! I am going to finish watching the butchering of the '59 but after that, I am going to "boyd-cot" the show. With Charlie and several other of the good guys gone, I can't see any value in watching an hour of screaming, hollering, and a bunch of other dysfunctional diatribes not mentionable here. With all the other auto-related shows, I wonder why no one has come up with a restoration show with real restorers doing a frame off restoration and without all the extemporaneous crap.

When the show first came out I was all excited because there was finally a TV show about working on cars, but my feelings toward the show quickly changed after seeing them butcher nice cars and constantly argue with each other. Who does Boyd think he is anyway? He talks like he's king of the world and treats his workers like poop.

Bob, we all just have to remember that T.V. is T.V. Their product is marketed to an audinence that thrives on controversy, violance, turmoil and and whatever else goes against the grain of the "Senior Generation" As far as I am concerned the whole Television product of the NOW generation SUCKS (Pulls about 50" of vacuum)!

Long live John Wayne (True Grit), Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger and Tonto! and Laurel and Hardy!

I met Boyd at a Rod & Custom show here in PDX several years ago. The promoter and I became good friends doing much adv business over the years. He brought Boyd in for a personal appearance type deal. The promoter and Boyd and I visited for quite a while one day at the show. Boyd seemed like a perfectly normal, nice guy. Frankly, I'll bet he is and the whole 'krapola' stuff on the TV show is just to get 'excitement' from the viewers. Sorta like the 'talk shows' and all that. Most all that stuff is just to get people riled up / upset / etc. so they stay tuned to see what happens next / talk about it with friends / etc.

It's simply a 'ratings ploy.'

And, it obviously works!!!

Sorry JYD - I missed your reference to "Dish" - I guess that's sorta like you missed V6 on the '46 pick-up in MS.....

Never missed it.....because it wasn't there!!! You are getting about as bad as Macky Wacky not understanding that all 1932 passenger cars had a synchromesh transmission! ha ha! I kill me!

Regarding the Boydster, no doubt some of the show is hype for better ratings, but why would anyone with a national reputation want to go on national TV and portray himself as a complete moron like Coddington does? Not only that, I have a good friend who is also a long time VCCA member and he knows Coddington personally, and has for many years. According to him, what you see on the TV show is pretty much the way it is.  :( :( :(

On the flip side of the coin, the show "Overhaulin" with Chip Foose (once a friend of Boyd's and a partner in the business....they are now apparently bitter enemies) consists of professionals designing and working on vehicles in a no nonsense atmosphere. What a contrast between the two shows. By the way, "Charlie the Painter Dude" that was one of the good guys that quit Coddington on the show, is now working for Chip Foose. laugh laugh
