What is the material that is suppose to be on the screen that fits into the chrome radio grille, which is actually part of the dashboard? I see reminants of a "fuzzy material" along the edges. It is completely bare screen in between the vertical chrome grill work. wazzup

Hi BigBob,

The material is like screen wire that has been "flocked" black. The purpose is to screen any light from behind the dashboard and to keep the occupants from looking directly at the radio speaker. It also kept dust and dirt from getting inside the front of the radio and doing damage to the speaker, and served as a background that enhanced the looks of the chrome speaker grill.

First you have to find the flock. I used model railroad grass for mine. It comes in a variety of colors, maybe even black, and is the right consistency. Clean and paint the screen, lay it on the front side on some sort of spacer, I used an old coffee can, and spray the backside with upholstery adhesive, I used 3M. Generously sprinkle the flock on, cover with a piece of wax paper and press the flock into the glue. Flip over and repeat.

The biggest problem was finding the flock in the right color.

Thanks, Brian.

I suppose practice makes perfect and if you mess up, you can soak it in acetone and then start over. If I understand you correctly, you flock both sides of the screen.

I thought it looked better to do both sides but you could try doing only the front. The flock I used was not very long, about 1/8 inch, so I needed both sides to get a good fill in each of the holes in the screen.
