1966 CAPRICE cruise control What looks like an old lamp pull chain goes from the cruise control on the fire wall to the carb linkage. This chain sometimes gets snagged. If it snags when not using cruise control, that is OK, you just cannot use cruise control. However, if it gets snagged when the cruise control is being used, then you cannot turn-off cruise control off and cannot slow the car. Is this lamp chain system correct for 1966? Any ideas to prevent snagging? You can see the chain in the photo. You can see rub marks on the valve cover from it moving.
For some reason that DOES look familiar. I would say you could run the chain through a thin flexible tube to keep it from flopping around and from snagging on anything.
I would question though... has it actually happened or is this just Preventative Maintenance?
Yes. Once I was doing 75 on the turnpike with cruise control. I sped up to 85 to get round a number of semis. The cruise would not release and nothing would turn it off. I turned of the ignition and braked hard and discovered the chain was snagged.
You might want to check a shop manual for your car.
I seem to remember that lots of GM cars in that era used the “lamp chain” on the cruise control. I also think there is a spec for how much slack there should be in that chain.
