Hello,

This may just be me worrying about something that doesn’t matter, but I wanted a second opinion.

The lever on my new fuel pump for 1954 210 w/ original 235 is crooked. More precisely, its not perpendicular to the pump body.

Is this a big deal? Or should I seek an exchange with the vendor?

Pictures attached - first is view from the top; second is with pump upside down.

Thank you!

Hi drtyler

Demand your money back.
That's just wrong.

Thank you both, I'll pursue an exchange with the vendor. They are a good one, so I feel this will work out well.

If the lever is crooked, would it cause excessive wear on the cam?

But just in case and to be clear... did you compare it to the one you pulled out?

I did compare. The old one is not crooked. I also have an old AC fuel/vacuum pump that came from another 235, and its lever is not crooked.

I am also trying to reason what harm the crooked lever will cause.
Maybe no harm? But I just don’t know.

Quick update - I sent these same pictures to the vendor, and they state that there is nothing wrong.

Just for future reference, this is the FS-49G (fuel pump with glass bowl for 235) from FS.

I have NEVER seen a pump with that problem before, and something IS wrong with it.

Can that lever be pulling straight down on the diaphragm stem?

I thought FS was better than that.

This is disappointing.

PS

Maybe ask the vendor to send you a picture of another pump in their stock that looks the same to prove that it's normal.

Call TFS and ask for Steve. (the owner) . Explain the problem and I am sure he will resolve the issue. I did check a couple used ones I have and neither have a bent arm.

I emailed the pictures to Steve, and asked for his opinion. He felt the pump was not satisfactory, and they will swap the pump.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Ditto that.

You've restored my faith in them. 👍 🙂

I have seen some that appeared bent. As long as there is plenty of oil flowing across that lobe it probably would be fine. We all have seen fuel pump arms that did not wear evenly - meaning they did not perfectly mate up with the cam lobe.

That being said, if it washed out the cam lobe and caused other damage, 40 to 50 years ago it was not a real big deal because this old stuff was all over the place and readily available. Not so much anymore. The safe thing to do is get a pump lever that is in better condition.
