Does anyone know how new I can go with a cylinder engine to put in my 31 independence with any modifications?

I'm not sure I understand the question. What type engine are you considering? Why do you need to replace the current engine?

If you mean without any modifications then your choices are fairly limited. About the only engines that will bolt in with minimal work are other Chevy 6 cylinders from the early 30's. Even those will require some modifications or use of mating parts for that year engine.

1931 is the only year without any modifications. '29-'30 don't require many. Neither does 1932 or 1933 truck. The newer the more modifications that are required.
