54 235 is it necessary to have the vacuum advance connected? The engine seems to run fine but when I put it in drive the engine sputters and dies?

There should be no vacuum signal to the distributor when the engine is at idle. You can check that by disconnecting the vacuum line and putting your finger over the end when the car is idling.

The purpose of the vacuum advance is to increase timing when the throttle is open and there is only a light load (high vacuum) on the engine. The increased timing will improve fuel economy slightly.

I think your problem is somewhere else. You can test it by disconnecting that line. It will not cause any problems driving without the vacuum advance connected. You do need to plug the line.
