My 1965 impala uses steel cam and crank sprockets , and a timing chain to connect the two. The gear drive timing gears may be an aftermarket product someone later has used in the 327.

All the Chev V engines I know of are chain drive cam where as the in line are a steel and fibre gear drive. I do know there are some after market conversions available here in Aus and guess some in the US as well.

I know Pontiac used nylon camshaft gears in 1967 though the early 70s as most GM cars. Ford used nylon cam gears as well.

As Jack pointed out above, If there is a chain, they are not gears, they are sprockets.

The "nylon" GEARS WERE ACTUALLY THE CAM SPOKET had teflon teeth. As it aged the teflon chipped off. I do not remember for sure exactly which years had the Teflon but I DO NOT THINK 1966 HAD IT. THE REPLACENT GEARS DID NOT HAVE THE TEFLON teeth.

Generally by 100.,000 miles it wa advisable to replace the chain on either style.
