I have a 1936 Master. When I look under the dash there does not appear to be any wire color coding. All wires look alike. Should there be some kind of identification? The wiring is pretty simple so I can trace functions easy but I was just wondering.

Also what type wire (gauge, insulation type....) should I use to repair or replace under dash wiring? In other words, how to keep as close to original as possible when I need to replace wires. I am not sure the existing wires are original type. Some are solid and others are multi-strand.

Thanks for any information.

The original wiring was color coded and all of the wires should be stranded.

The original wires were color coded with a small colored string woven in with the tan covering....you may not notice it if wires are dirty and old but its there.

Are the colors significant? Is each function defined somewhere in a reference (i.e. ignition=red, tail light=green and so on)? Or is the colored string just to provide a tracer so you can determine the other end?

For some strange reason the early shop manuals did not show the tracer colors....They did in the '40's.....but thats no help.Let me give it some thought.I have a new 1933-36 Wiry Jo harness and they followed the original colors.I will see if that will help.
