There should be a bronze thrust plate withe a single hole for the retaining screw that fits between the rear face of the cam gear hub,and the front of the 1st camshaft bearing journal.Normally the end float of the camshaft is only 0.003" - 0.005".If yours has about an inch of end float, the cam gear may be loose on its mounting spigot, and not the normal press fit of 0.001" - 0.002".

thank you that movement was with the gear off , what happened is the engine was running ok but made a squeling noise and stopped when we checked the cam gear had come loose but not completly off so the bottom of the engine was moving but the top wasnt, and idea why the gear would come loose it was fitted not long ago (all I can think of is the woodruff key is worn) the gear is a metal one not the original and I have no idea how old etc.

If the gear cam of the shaft I suspect the shaft and gear are garage art at best. The next problem is to find why this happened and I would check the camshaft tunnel carefully.
