can you jump start 6 volt battery from a 12 volt battery as most cars on the road are 12 volt

Not sure about the jumping, I carry an extra 6 volt battery in my trunk so I can jump my own if required, I've never had to use it, probably because I have it....

If done quickly and carefully, and disconnected as soon as the engine starts, usually no harm results.

As long as nothing electric is on such as radio, heater, any lights (including the dome light because the door is open), you can use 12 volts to start. Remove cables immediately once engine is started and don't futz around before starting.

An inexpensive battery charger is a better idea, and fixing whatever is drawing the battery down is even better.

What do you guys think of a battery minder? If there is a draw would it never turn off? I do need a minder for 1 truck; anyone know of a good one?

I use a disconnect on most of the others just to be sure; It lets me disconnect the battery at car shows also.

louis,

I have been using a couple of "battery minders" for a few years and not only have they kept my batterires in good shape, the desulphation mode has brought some back to life...

do a search, as these have been discussed not long ago...and peruse the "vendor index"...

also, some have bought tricklers from wal-mart and say they have been just as good...

and, some members here say just regualr maintenance has kept their batteries good for years...

ok epi

If you call Antique Auto Battery In Hudson Ohio. 1-800-426-7580 They have several different trickle chargers. Some where you can leave the charger hooked up all the time and one where you can have four different batterys hooked up at the same time. They will send you literature on everything they sell. chevy

Thanks for the information guys; I would have to have one that stays hooked up and turns itself off.

Will ask for their information Don, thanks.

Lately some of the electronic stores here have been selling solar panels for use as trickle chargers which would be effective for long term storage. Just make sure the panel is appropriately positioned.

Does VCCA deduct points for battery disconnects on judged cars?

I have battery disconnects on my 32 and 57 and both cars have been judged with out any points being deducted. The battery disconnects are really a safety feature to use especially on the older cars that still have the original wiring In them. They also are alot better to use Instead of taking one of the cables loose from the battery all the time. I use to pay about 10 dollars for one when they first came out and now you can find them at swap meets for about 3 to 5 dollars each. Im talking about the one that has the green knob that you tighten to use the battery or loosen when not In use. chevy

If the disconnect is visible then a deduction is possible. It will depend on the judge but since it was not an original feature or option it is subject to deduction.

I remember what we did back in 1953 to start a manual 3 speed car with a dead battery. get some other boys to give you a "push" ....switch on, choke half way out,get her rolling in second gear and pop the clutch! and away we go!

The real test was to push start the powerglide. Ever wonder how all those bumpers got so banged up?

Yeah, and locked together, all I ever learned to do was jump on the lower one till they came apart. But when it got up to speed it would start. Probably a powerglide owner is the one that invented "Jumper Cables" I wonder if he ever jumped hung up cars apart so he called them "jumper cables"?

Why would anyone be in a car with a dead battery at -40* and in 3' of snow unless they were attempting suicide, or ice fishing or hunting snow bunnies?

I drive my 37s every day and get about 9 years out of used electric vehicle batteries.
The batteries need to bubble or the acid will stratify.
