Any ideas on how to remove the headlight switch from the dash of a 46 pickup. Read elsewhere to just grab, twist & pull the knob, or, to find a release lever on the switch for the knob/shaft. Having no luck either way. Any input appreciated by a rank amateur.
Thanks

Hi,

Either a look with a mirrow or get your head under the dash so you can see and look closely at the backside of the headlight switch. You will see or feel a 'button' in line with the headlight switch shaft (the push - pull) shaft.
When you locate this button press in on the button with one hand and with the other grasp the knob and while pulling out on the knob twist it slightly. If you have done everything correctly the knob AND shaft will come out.

When the shaft has been removed use a wide tip screwdriver to remove the escutcheon by unscrewing it. When it is removed you can pull back slightly on the switch and remove it as far as the attached wiring will allow.

I beg to differ with Ray.

The 1946 truck has the light switch rod with the L bend on the inner end.It does not rotate..There is a flat spring type clip on the back of the light switch that is depressed to release the rod if I remember corectly..Its the same type as used on 1939 and prior passenger car and 1946 and prior trucks-the years that did not have a dashlight dimming rehostat built into the headlight switch.

As Gene said unless the light switch has been replaced it uses the same switch and rod as the 39 car.
The rod has a threaded bezel and nut that holds the light switch and L shaped rod in place in the inst. panel. The bezel can not be removed from the rod. The bezel is inserted through the inst. panel and light switch and the nut(uses 9/16 wrench)is screwed on the back side of the threaded bezel. Remove the nut and the rod and switch must be removed together. When re-installing the L shaped rod it must be placed in the slot in the light switch to make it function.

Many thanks, the switch in my truck had the L shaped rod. Once the nut was removed from the bezel it all came apart easily. Thanks all for your help. This site is a great resource for a first-timer like myself.
