After changing the oil , cleaning oiling the rockers tappets , Points , checked the timing , syringed oil into bores , cleaning the carburetor out , cleaning and repair to the vacuum fuel tank , hand turning the engine over , new battery the 27 started up was great to hear . Main fuel tank will be removed at a later date for cleaning , engine ran on fuel poured into vacuum fuel pump for test .
On warming up I noticed oil leaking out between the top of the oil filter and the base of the old coil ( noted that the oil was very black compared to the new oil added ) I haven't had a chance to look further yet and was wanting to know of a posable leak source , I shut the engine down on seeing the leak .

If the oil filter is really old you may have some rust-through on the top of the filter.

The oil filter looks very old and I will remove it and check it over , The oil was just replaced is it possible to remove the external filter without draining the sump first ?
Do you know the filter canister is constructed eg type of filtering material used in early filters , incase I have to do a temporary repair ( if this can or should be attempted ) till I can source a replacement filter , still learning the basics on this old 27 Gem

The oil filter can be removed without draining the sump. Replacement filters are available. Perhaps one of your "chaps" can provide local source information.
