Hello,
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me find a generator pulley for my 1935 Chevy Standard. I recently found out that the pulley attached to the generator is the wrong one and my spare, well, I checked today, it has a giant chunk of metal missing from the pulley. I'm looking for part numbers 836611 or 837623 for the correct size pulley, which should be about 4 3/8" in diameter. I've checked ebay, none listed currently, and I've checked with a couple Chevy with lots of old parts, no luck. Thanks again!

Is there a large commercial alternator/generator/starter rebuilder in your area? They usually have a large supply of parts. If not, send me a photo of the broken one and the exact dimensions of what you need and I can check with ones here in Detroit.

The part number listed in the 1959 Parts & Accessory catalog is #597667 which looks like it is the pulley and fan as a unit. It reads: "35-38 ALL (exc. EB, EC, Q, HC, HD, HE, T)
DIA. 3 3/8" GROOVE WIDTH 5/8".
The exceptions are all for commercial or utility vehicles. I just checked on eBay and there several listed at very reasonable prices. Hope this helps
Jeff

Thanks Jeff. I had a spare pulley on a generator that's currently mounted to my spare '35 engine. I checked yesterday, it has a large chunk out of it, so its no good but it measures 4 3/8" in diameter. The original fan blade is also detachable, so I'm not sure if the part # you found would work either considering the difference in diameter and attachment to the fan blade . I appreciate the help. I'm new to this, so I'll take a look at the part number you mentioned and find out more about it. I'm here in Maine, there isn't much large or commercial in any industry for me to seek out for help with finding a replacement pulley. Thank you.

602243 2 27/32” D w/fan ”˜36 All low speed vehicles
837948 ’36 All (replacement for ’35 ex EC, EB, Q)

These are mostly pulleys without the attached fan which were installed on 1935 Master and later Chevrolets with the ventilated higher amperage generators.

As the astute readers will note a few don't have "Measurements" as the author didn't have an example to measure. Despite asking for additional information from readers those dimensions were not received. If anyone can help fill in the missing measurements please post it so the information can be updated.

Also note that the 836611 is not the factory installed '35 Standard pulley. The 837623 was the factory installed '35 Standard pulley and only differed in the thickness from the earlier part. They can be substituted and only those of you with the table would even know.

Jeff,
The EC in your list of exceptions is 1935 Standard series. The 943J generator on my '35 Standard does not have a fan.

Chipper,
Would you know how to contact the author of the aforementioned article? He must be a highly intelligent and resourceful guy to have amassed such a comprehensive list.

Mike

I was informed your compliment was appreciated by the author. I understand he had a number of pulleys most with part number cast into the metal. Also had a few aftermarket pulleys and wanted to match them to the original Chevy part.

That's an outstanding author, for sure.
If you aren't wild for originality, the smaller the diameter the better the gen will work, because it's running faster and will give charge at lower road speed, like in city driving or parades.
With the tiny electrical load on these cars, I doubt the fan serves any great purpose.
Of course I can't be sure. There may be inefficiencies of which I'm unaware in some generators.

Thanks for all the replies and input. I still haven't been able to locate a replacement pulley and have checked with a couple antique Chevy parts dealers, ebay and a few friends for leads. There has to be a few sitting on shelves somewhere that I can put to use! Pulleys with part # 836611 and 837623 will work the best for a 943J generator. Replacements for the 935V generator seem much more available. Thanks again!

Try Don's Antique Auto Parts in Fremont, CA (510) 792-4390.

Don owned a wrecking yard with 1946 and earlier vehicles for many years and then stripped the yard and started the parts store. He passed away last year, but his inventory was bought and I believe they are still selling parts.

I was privileged to see the back of his shop three years ago. Below is a pic that I found online showing what you see when you walk in the front door. ;-)

Cheers, Dean

Well, I gave Don's a try and the number listed above, which is the same listed online, has been disconnected. I'm out of luck so far. Thanks for the lead!

Brian, I sent you a P.M. Forgot to mention, my generator is a 943J.
