First the 1937 is competely different from a 1938.
When the accessory defroster is installed on top of the accessory CHEVROLET heater a duct was run to the drivers side only defroster opening. Then a deflector was mounted on top of the garnish moulding to direct heated air on the windshield.
In other words a genunine Chevrolet heater was required to install the defroster attachment.

My '38 didn't have a heater. I had to buy everything. I got my stuff from a seller on ebay who restores vintage heaters. I don't remember his name, having a senior moment. I got the heater, defroster, outlets and aftermarket switch from him. Are you saying you don't have the defroster that sits on top of the heater or you don't have the duct outlet?

In 1937 there is only a provision for a defroster outlet on the driver's side. You still need the heater unit that has the second motor for the defroster fan. The correct one for 1937 has only one defroster duct outlet.

My car has a later heater/defroster unit because it has 2 outlets for the defroster ducts.

Those are difficult to find. The under dash part is a little easier to find.

If you see one don't hesitate to buy it.

Just keep searching eBay and swap meets plus the Parts for Sale section in the G&D. I call those suppliers even if the part I want is not listed in the ad. Many of them have quite a stash.

A decent looking one with the chrome trim ring just sold on eBay for $400. There is a rougher looking one without the trim ring at a”buy it now” price if $250.

These are rare parts so expect to pay.

If you can't find a vent, here is a picture of the plate that was used to cover the opening if the car did not have a defroster.
