Should I use urethane window caulk compound to install the windshield in my 1935 Chevy truck, or setting tape?

Not sure but I don't think you really need anything. The gasket should seal it tight. Let me know what you find. I am going to be installing my windshield and rear glass in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks,

I have used setting tape on truck windshields. There are more than one thickness so pick the one that you need. As long as the glass is tight in the frame it should be okay.

Thanks I will go with the tape. There is an Aussie site that has two good videos on how to install the glass

Pete. I will go with tape. Good info on glass installation at Glass 4 Classics on line. Two good videos that show the steps and techniques.

I watched those videos. They were great. I didn't know anything about it. I will get some to put on my windows to hold them in the channel. I thought you were talking about windshields. I don't think the windshield gasket needs anything. The glass fits in a groove in the gasket which should be tight enough to seal out water. The tape looks a lot neater and easier than goopy liquid butal which always seems to make a mess. How do I know what thickness to get?

Measure the glass thickness and measure the groove/ channel width the glass will go into. Sub track the glass thickness from the grove/ channel width and than divide that number by two. Example. Glass = 1/4 in. Grove = 3/8 in . 3/8 - 1/4 glass thk = 1/8 in . 1/8in ÷ 2= 1/16 in thick setting tape needed. Articles I have read recommend something a little thicker , so I purchased both the exact size and 1/64 thicker from Bob Drake repro parts. Have not rec ' d them yet

Small quantity bottles of kerosene that the Aussie video recommended to use as a lubricant and for activating the tape, can be found on Amazon.

There is a CORK based setting tape that uses window cleaner to swell the cork to set the window. It is a lot easier to clean up after. The installation procedure is the same. Fold over the edge of the window. Tape into position. spray liberally with window cleaner. Set window into channel. trim edges. Clean window. Done.

You guys might know this already, but 1935 car and truck windshields are completely different. Installation of glass in either does not resemble the other.

Peter,
The '35 truck has a windshield that folds out for ventilation. The glass is set in a frame with a hinge at the top.
