It's been about five years since I changed the drive & driven gears in my '50 manual transmission. Can I just unbolt them and pull them straight out or is there more to it? I have been looking for the old gears that I removed for about five days now. Just can't locate them. I need them for a visual because the speedometer does not work. If I attach a cordless drill the trans side of the cable, the needle does turn. Any help or photos would be greatly appreciated.

The driven speedometer gear comes out with the speedometer cable connection that is screwed into the transmission housing (4.337 gear assy). The driving gear (spiral gear) removal requires you to open the ball joint, split the u joint, unbolt the front end of the u joint, slide it off, then slide off the long spacer, then slide the gear off the mainshaft. From what you describe, your problem might be that the u joint bolt is loose. The spiral gear is a friction fit between the long spacer and bearing. A loose bolt would allow the spiral gear to slip on the mainshaft and thus not turn the speedometer driven gear.

I replaced a missing bolt and took it for a ride today. It was nice to see the speedometer showing 25 mph.
