My project restoring my 38 is coming along slowly. I'm now at the point that I need to know if the car came with painted brake and fuel lines or not. Also since I have my wheels painted and ready for the tires to be mounted. Were there tubeless tires back then or do I need to find some tubes?

Brake and gas lines were not painted.
Tubless tires did not appear on a Chevrolet until 1955.

You might find tubes at farm stores. They used to keep them in stock locally.

Brake and fuel lines were tinned steel. Same coating as old fashioned "tin" cans.

I just bought a set from Universal out of Hershey. Four at a little over a buck.

Came in a Coker box. Haven't opened them. No excitement there.

Thank you all for the help. I have the tubes on order and I'm leaving the lines natural gray. Thanks again.

Thanks everyone...I'm the new guy on the forum. Using the search, I found this thread as I too had the same question on painting the brake lines (new set ordered) for my 1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe. I'm going to assume that "do not paint the brake lines" extends to that year too. If I'm off, correct me. Thanks so much, looking forward to learning a ton from this group!

Correct, ChrisFaris. I, too, have a 41 Special Deluxe (sedan) and I replaced all of the brake lines a little over a year ago. First thought the stainless steel lines would be best - total waste of money. If you're using the original blocks/connections, use the copper ones to get a good seal. I bought a 25-foot roll of brake line at O'Reily's and cut, flared, and bent them myself. After much frustration with harder, more expensive pre-flared lines (kept leaking at the blocks), making them myself out of softer copper finally did the trick. And copper won't rust so no need to paint.

Copper brake lines are ilegal in most states.

If he purchased the line at a parts store and specified it was for brake line I am guessing he got the copper/nickel line and not plain copper which should not be used for brake line.

Correct. I was calling them copper but they were actually copper-nickel alloy. Much easier to get a good seal against the original blocks and to tweak the bends when installing them.

That sounds better. Just wanted to make sure. I believe that there is no sense to install stainless lines on a collector car.
