I am working on a 1932 clutch assembly. The pressure plate and flywheel have some pitting. I also have a 1929 clutch assembly with less pitting. The casting numbers on both flywheels are 836617 and both pressure plate casting numbers are 836621. They appear identical in every way, although the clutch disks and bell housing are obviously different. I checked a parts supplier, and they had different part numbers for the 1929 and 1932. Are these parts interchangeable on a 1929/1932, and if not, are these part numbers for a 1929 or 1932?

The 1932 August 1st edition of the Chevrolet parts book shows the following:

Flywheel, part number 836616, 1932.

Clutch cover, part number 835821, 1929-31.

Clutch cover, part number 836620, 1932.

Pressure plate, part number 836461 (use only with Flywheel No. 836230 or 836363), 1929-31.

Pressure plate, part number 836621, 1932.

It is easy to tell the 29-31 pressure plate from a '32. The earlier one had four arms and the later only three. There are many other differences but counting the arms is easy.

Both pressure plates have 3 arms. They are retained to the throw out bearing in indentical fashion with springs. Both pressure plates have three notches that match the three pegs in the flywheel housing. Were the parts vastly different during those years? I am confused as to why the casting numbers match, and the parts appear to be the same, but the bell housing is completely different. I think I have a match, unless there is a minor, minor difference I don't see.

What are the casting dates on the clutch covers and on the flywheels?

Sounds to me like you have 1932 parts and not 1929-31 parts because, as Chipper Dipper stated, the 1929 pressure plate used four arms, not three. laugh laugh
