I am cleaning the worm gear on the steering box and am wondering if there was some type of special coating applied at the factory. I washed it down with kerosene and then brake clean and then WD-40 to protect from rust but when wiping down it gives off a black color like lamp black or thinned black paint. It appears to be only in all the non-contact areas so I thought perhaps it was some type of factory coating to prevent corrosion but being inside the box I would not think that would be necessary. Anyone have an idea what it might be?

Those gears are hardened and ground and that black coloring you see if from the heat treating process.

Thanks John. After cleaning several times I felt most was removed so I have now assembled it.
