Can anyone tell me what the differences are between a 48 Fleetmaster and Fleetliner?

Thanks Russell, I had done some more searching and had gone to the Chevrolet archives , which is where your post came from. The convertible or Cabriolet was produced in only the Fleetmaster designation. Just getting to know my "new, old car". Pretty encouraged with what I've found on the old girl so far. Looks like Dad had gone through the engine before he put it away. Found a list of items he had replaced in the car. Engine is free, plugs look like new. Of course all his work was done in the mid 60's so a lot of his work has dried up if it was exposed to the elements at all. I can see the edges of new side cover gaskets and the valve cover gasket was new also. Come spring I'll check the fuel system over and see how she runs. Shifting mechanism appears to be either jammed or just stiff with age. We'll see.

If your car has a vacuum shift, it will be very difficult to shift without the engine running.

Uncle Ed is correct. Watch this clip to see how it works. Skip to 5:40 to start watching.

Alright, I wasn't aware of that. Thank you. The education continues.
