What is the correct bell housing for a 1940 Chevy PickUp?
I have the 3 speed transmission. Will a passenger car bell housing work?
If so, what year? What number would it be?
And, of course, where can I find one?

Thanks

Mike

I think your part would be the comm/utility? $10.85. Easy :)

I wouldn't think a passenger would work, because don't trucks have the larger clutch?

Hi Mike,

Once you I.D. what you want let us know. I have a few (4) passenger 40-48 transmission bell housings (839181 part #). Ebay also has a variety for sale.

Good luck, Mike

I have a 3 speed transmission number 591195 that came with the truck. Appears to be original.
I also have 3 bell housings that came with it.
#3701429 which i believe is a 1940-54 passenger
#838669. 1937-39 passenger
#3837001 1955-59 truck.

None of them seem to have the proper configuration for my transmission.

Help would be appreciated...

Mike,

The bellhousing for the 40 Chev trucks has a mounting pad with three 5/16-18 tapped holes on the left side. This pad serves as the mount for the combination brake/clutch pedal and master cylinder bracket. I can't say for sure, but I don't believe the passenger bellhousings have this feature. I believe all the commercial (truck) bellhousings from 1938 through 1947, with the possible exception of COE models, should fit your 40 pickup.

The 37 truck bellhousing may also fit, though they used a different clutch and the clutch fork was different.
