I believe the rear mount is different. I rebuilt my 50 trans. using new 54 parts. They had stronger parts. better countershaft, needle bearings, better synros, etc. Might be hard to find new parts but should be able to use the 53 into your case if they are good.

Yeah as long as it came from a car. Not sure if all the "good" parts came in a 53 but 54 did and they will fit. Maybe Gene will know. I know taxis had stronger trans. They are such a simple trans. compared with what we work on today.

The 1953 and 1954 transmissions had the double set of roller bearings where the front main drive gear and rear main shaft connect. This can be installed in a 1949-1952 trans. that has the jumping out of high gear problem.

1954 has the roller bearing cluster gear. Can be installed in any 1940 and up trans..

The late 1953 and all 1954 models have a revised syncro, drum and 2nd gear. (2 lugs VS 4 lugs.)

The ideal wpold be to find a GOOD 1954 trans. and install all the internal parts along with new (ball) bearings, needle bearings and thrust washers.

Gene is absolutely right. That is why I rebuilt mine with all those upgrades parts. I bought mine from a fellow member Warren Foster I believe from Texas. Might still have some left. Hey Gene has the 53 got all those upgrades?

Sorry to hear of his passing. Yeah he was a great guy to deal with and helped me a lot on my transmission.

To install the 1954 guts into a 1950 case it will be necessary to use all of the 1954 parts. This includes the reverse idler gear and cluster gear and shafts.

If the 1954 case case raised "bumps" where the mounting holes are on your 1950 case you can drill and tap the 1954 case.

The 1953 had the bushing type cluster gear.

The 1953 transmission changed to the 1954 gears on Aug 18 at he Muncie plant and Aug 26 at the Saginaw plant....Trans seaial numbers M 8-18 and S-8-26.

The various changes in mid 1953 were "to close up gear tolerances which will assist in minimizing transmission gear rattle (cluch chatter) ) " as per TSB DR 159
