Joined the forum last October, and more recently joined VCCA, as well. Located 30 miles north of Dallas, I am currently enjoying tinkering with a '53 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe, with 67k miles showing. Mostly original, but it has a '54 235 which was probably installed in the '60's, based on some other clues. The current project is a 261 short block that is slated for the Bel Air.

I've worked on International and Chevy in-lines since 1966 near as I can recall. Originally from upstate NY, I spent most of my working years in the northeast, and relocated to the Dallas area 8 years ago. I don't miss the weather, and especially the winter salt-covered roads!. Working on vehicles that spent their years here in TX is a dream compared to what I used to have to deal with. Yes, Kroil and PB Blaster are my friends!

I'm presently semi-retired, and I do occasional consulting gigs that keep my auto hobby "fed."

A 261 engine will not allow you to travel any faster than a 235 BUT will allow you to accelerate faster.

Andy, 41 and Chev, thanks for the welcome.

I've actually been foot dragging on the 261 project, since the 235 does cruise just fine. If it weren't the "wrong" engine for the car, I would stick with the 235 ( '53 Powerglide but engine is a '54, coded for standard trans). The 261 is a good stealth upgrade, that will still look correct.
