Is it safe to say the 261 engine is identified by its " captains bars " ....... or were 261 engines manufactured without the" captains bars ", as well ?

The safe way is to get the block casting number from behind the starter.

Gene .... So, are you saying the " captains bars " were not necessarily shown on the 261 engines ?

I was always under the impression that the captains bars were always " part " of the 261 identification..

Yes, the bars can be found on some 235's...... perhaps the truck engines? I "use" to remember but time takes it toll. I feel sure all 261's had them but have no documentation handy right now for either one.

Although they are claimed to exist..... I have never run across a 261 block that did not have the captains bars.

Get the "stamped on the ledge" engine number first. Easy to see.

It seems then, the only TRUE WAY to identify the 261 is either the casting number or the serial number ..... and do not depend on captains bars, or no captains bars.

Thanks for the replies, folks.

Another true way is the simesed cylinders with the added coolant holes between the "sets" of cylinders.

Just as added reading and information:
Some folks refer to them as "steam holes"....and before someone ask, yes a 235 head will fit on the 261 but be sure to drill the matching coolant holes in the head. I just did one a couple years ago and used the head gasket to mark the head. You can drill them straight into the head but to do it right they need to be at an angle to be sure to "center" the holes in the coolant passage.

But how can you tell if an engine has simesed cylinders with out cutting the block apart.? ....or removing the head and measuring the bore.

If the 261 engine has the correct water pump the 1954 261 engine will have a 1 3/4" lower hose outlet rather than a 1 1/2".
