Hello all, my friend is looking for a 38 banjo steering wheel and has told me that all the ones he has seen have a spline and a key way cut into it. I told him the two on my cars only had splines and doubled check to make sure. Why are there different types?

My '38 steering wheel has splines and an unused keyway. The mast has only splines. I have the base steering wheel, not a banjo.

The 1937 still used a kewway.Splines were new for 1938. I suspect some 1938 wheels may have had both.

Chevgene's suspicion is correct. I took a banjo wheel off a '38 and indeed it had both splines and a keyway. I sold it but still have photos of it if anyone is seriously interested in seeing them. I regularly see banjo wheels advertised on ebay saying they fit a '37 - '39. I sent one seller a notice saying that was not true yet he persisted in saying they were interchangeable. Buyer beware! Maybe someday someone will put together a small info packet with photos showing close-ups of the differences in '37 - '39 banjo wheels that will clear this issue up once and for all. Beamer

Sounds like a great topic for an article in the G&D.

The "timely Topics" in the May 1938 Service News ------STEERING WHEEL------"The steering wheel for 1938 models is mounted to the steering gear worm shaft through 36 serrations, while the steering wheel for 1937 and earlier models used a woodruf key. We have found some cases where a 1938 steering wheel has been installed on 1937 models. When this is done, there is no definite lock between the steering hib and worm shaft, which results in the steering wheel lossening on the shaft. When this happens the driver has lost control of his car and damage results. Great care must be excercised to make sure that the 1938 model steering wheels are not installed on earlier cars."

I would suspect the 1937 model wheel can not be mounted on a 1938 but if a 1938 wheel has both splines and it can be mounted on a 1937 or prior. I can find no information about 1938 or 1939 wheels, banjo or production, having both splines and a key way other than what is here in this thread.
