I think I finally got all the bugs out of my 47 tranny as far as the grinding issues. Only problem left is it still drops out of 2nd gear. I think it is the vacuum shift because if I unhook the shifting rod from the column it stays in gear ok. With it hooked up I put a little manual pressure on the canister then it is ok. And I have good vacuum to it. I am thinking that the canister may have a tear in it and it is leaking by. I have not looked in manual to see if it is adjustable or not. Can anyone give me their thoughts on this. Also if anyone has a vacuum shift they may want to sell or I heard there is a kit to eliminate it. Chevs of 40's does not have it. Thanks for reading this.

Gravity helps the gear shift lever drop out of second gear. You say it stays in second when you unhook the canister. If you drive the car and apply slight upward pressure when in second gear and it stays in gear you need to adjust the vacuum shift adjustment on the piston by screwing the adjustment out.The adjustment is the fine threaded shaft connected as an assembly of the vacuum line in the centre of the cannister.I would drive the car, shift to second, if it jumps out of second stop, climb underneath and unscrew rod 2 turns and carry on driving to see if it stays in second.

I have been trying it on my lift in my garage but will try to do what you said. It was raining so hard here the day I put it in that I did not go on the road with it. I will respond when I check it today or tomorrow. Appreciate the info.

Vacuum cylinder. If you have not done so, I think you should follow the lubrication instructions. Use jack oil. This might increase the holding power? instruction

The vacuum shift eliminate kit was made by Champ products. They sometimes come up on Ebay. My 47 had one fitted to it when I bought the car.

I finally got the transmission issue solved I believe. No more grinding or dropping out of second gear. The 2nd gear issue turned out to be a linkage adjustment which took about 15 minutes. Sure learned alot about the ins and outs of the tranny. I want to Thank anyone whom gave me advice and where to look for more info.
