Anyone know if the 39 front fender opening brace mounted to the frame or to the cowl? I have these chev40s simple rod braces that reach the frame but I can't find a hole in the frame. Awhile back I recall a 39 that had u channel style curved bracket that mounted from the tab at the back of fender opening to a caged nut on the lower cowl. Anyone know which is correct? Mike

Since no one with real knowledge has answered you I will put in my two cents. I believe the rods you are talking about is an aftermarket product. I called Chevys of the 40s to see about purchasing a set for myself and was told they no longer offer this product. The conclusion the sales representative came to was that they did not work as advertised. I believe the only true fender bracing was a U-shaped stamped metal bracket that mounted from the radiator support where the fender bolts to it to just under the headlight bucket.
Remember I said this is what I believe I could be wrong good luck on your project.

The above is corrext. There are no rods running from the skirt to the frame as there are for the back fenders. The skirt area of the front fender is stiffened by the running board so no rod is necessary.

you may find that the chevs of the 40's are used by hot rodders who remove the running boards completely. COF specialise in Hot rods.
The front of the fenders is supported on the inner front fender inner sheet metal , which has the air ducts to the radiator. and as well as having a smaller bracket from the headlights back to the radiator support structure.
