Okay folks. Here's what i got. I just put in the newly rebuilt 265...went to start it up for engine break in and we got some fairly consistant sputtering??? Acted like a foul plug? Not sure, but a little back firing noise coming from driver side exhaust. Sounded more @ the headers. I am thinking possibly the valves are too tight? I'm new at this, so I may be WAY OFF! I checked all the plugs on that side, none came up positive for gas, so I must be getting spark right? What could it be? Adam

Pull the plug wires while it is running one at a time and replace them and seee where there is NO difference. John

Hi, Sounds like a good time to run a compression check and see if anything shows up.

Do you have solid lifters or hydralics?...Sounds as if a valve is too tight....as noted a compression test will pin point it...or pulling one plug wire at a time...would readjust the valves

Vacuum gage will also show if valve (particularly intake) does not seat correctly. Gage reading will jump around if valve problem.

Make sure you have the plug wires correctly running to the cylinders. Especially on the passenger or even side. The loom runs from the disributor and then is divdied out and takes a twist at 6 and 8. Also make sure your distributor is at #1.
