The installation instructions say to fill the jar and slowly give the button four or five SLOW punps to fill the unit with water. I would assume in doing so a vacuum will fill the pump by foot unit with water.

I don't know about the 50's pick up trucks but they were quite common on the 70's and early 80's heavy duty trucks. They were also available as an accessory kit and were popular because they did not require wiring and could be added to almost any vehicle.

In 1955 they were not commonly found on trucks....at least in this part of the country.

54 and 55 1st used a foot pump. They were also the first year that there was a cable between the foot pump and the wiper motor to make the wipers "make a pass" when the foot pump was depressed. I have found bulletins that elude to them being also used with the electric wiper motors as well as the vacuum motor but have never seen the conversion parts to mount the second cable. The 54 accessory manual shows a little bit on the washer installation. I have some more info and pictures if you want to PM an e-mail address to me.

I was unable to find a specific part # for the 1955 first series trucks but I have no doubt it would have been the same as the washer for the 1954 trucks.

That was GM part # 986683 Group # 8798

This was a manual operated foot operated pump system.

My parts book list the "Washer unit" as 986983 for 54 and 55 1st series. The pump assy. is listed as 3706844.

1954 must have been the first year that type of W/S washer was offered as it is not shown in the 1953 parts catalog.

That is correct Gene.

A different type of washer kit was used on the 1951-1953 trucks.

It was GM part #986527 Group # 8.798
