I have a quick question. Were 265's painted chartreuse green in '57? Just curious as I saw one and judged it at a Classic Chevy Convention in the early 80's. Have not seen one since. Curious minds want to know. Ed Bittman VCCA#47508 Dade City,Fl

Yes the 265 cu. in. engines in 1957 cars were painted a yellowish green called chartreuse. That differentiated them from the orange 283 cu. in. engines.

In 1957 the 265 engine used in cars with standard transmissions was painted chartreuse until 12-12-56 for Flint engines and 1-11-57 for TonawANDA ENGINES. aFTER THAT POINT THEY WERE THE NORMAL ORANGE.

As a note. The 1957 265 had all the improvements made to the 283. It used the same block casting as a 283 but boreout to 3 3/4' RATHER THAN 3 7/8". Can easily be bored to the larger size and no one will kow the difference. It also used the 283 heads and intake and exhaust manifolds but did have the 1956 low lift camshaft.
