I'm going to do my best to describe this sand I've attached a picture of exactly what I'm talking about.

Where the "sleeve" fits over the top of the starter switch... As you can see in the picture, I've just got a bolt running through, and that bolt is what makes contact with the top of the starter switch.

Am I missing a piece? I get the feeling that's not how they would have done things originally.

On the linkage, instead of a bolt, there should be a large cotter pin. The pin holds the linkage spring in place.

Yea I figured a cotter pin would make more sense. Just need to get one. Is there anything between the cotter pin and top of the switch though?

The problem I have is that the hole is drilled too far back/the bolt bends and then pushing the starter pedal doesn't depress the switch enough to make a connection.

There is a coiled spring inside of the linkage that goes between the cotter pin and the starter switch plunger that activates the starter switch.

Ah Ha! Yea I don't have that piece...

I will just have to go get a cotter pin and a spring.

Thank you much!

here is what it looks like on my 1929
1929 Starter

Mine has a Spring, Washer, and the Pin
Spring (835785) sets against the Washer (835698), Washer sets against the end of the starter Link (835779), Also there is a Pin & Washer holding the Starter Link (835779) to the Bracket Assembly (356551)

Per the 1929-30 MPL
Pin, Starting Motor Lever to Pedal Link(1/4 Dia x 23/32" Long under Head).....356905
Spring, Starting Motor Pedal Link.............................................835785
Washer, Starting Motor Pedal Link Anti-Rattle.................................835698

Bracket Assembly, Starter Pedal...............................................356551
Link, Starting Motor Lever to Pedal...........................................835779
...Rod End Pin (1/4 Dia x 51/64 Long under Head)..............................114783
...Plain Washer (1/4) 106261

The Bracket was same on 1929-30, and then different one used on 1931-32. Looks like washer was only used on 1929. based on 1929-1930 MPL and 1929-1932 MPL side by side.

can get you specs on the spring if interested, since my transmission is torn down as i am working on it.

Thanks, BearsFan315, and happy birthday!

Yes, if you don't mind the specs on that spring would be handy.
