Working on a friend's 1932 engine, I noticed half the threads were showing inside the lock nuts for the rocker arm adjusting screws. The pushrods are correct 12" length, all other parts I can see are correct for 1932 including valves, rockers, stands and adjusting screws p/n 835664. I replaced them with adjusting screws p/n 837385 (1934-36 - about 3/32" longer), reset all valve clearances, and the lock nuts are now in their normal position. Some spare 1932 rocker arms in my collection have shorter 835664 screws and some have longer 837385 screws. Does anyone have an answer for this puzzle?

Have you checked to see if the head is correct? Possibly it may have a later head which is taller.

The cylinder head is correct '32. One idea is that replacement valve seats could place the valves in a lower position creating additional clearance.

I am out of guesses but I hope you find the cause and post it here as I have one valve on my 32 that is similar. The lock nut is right at the end of the thread rather than somewhat centered.

Did the original head have valve seat inserts or were the seats cut into the head casting?

My first 32 head had the seats cut into the cast...The one that I have now, on the car, had hardened inserts when I bought it....

The later parts book shows the length of the 1929-1933 adjusting screw as 1 3/16"
The 1934-1962 as 1 9/32".
Is the later ball end screw a perfect match for the 1932 push rod or will it eventually break out the end of thepush rod.

The longer screw is not a perfect match for the push rod. That makes a smaller contact area.

Lock nuts have 5 or 6 threads. Longer screws make 4 threads into the lock nut. Shorter screws make 2 threads into the lock nut.
