A friend is looking at a 1933 coupe to buy and asked me to go along today to look at it. It has a radio which is under the dash and has the remote control head. Was a radio offered in 1933? The radio head has a bowtie cutout in it so it is for a Chevrolet. Another thing that has me wondering is that the control head has 2 knobs for the radio and it also has a lock which requires a key. Does this sound right? Would the radio be locked?

Just checked my 1933 Chevrolet sales data book.

Shows a CHEVROLET'S SUPERHETRODYNE RADIO $59.50 completely installed.
The picture of the unit with speaker is in a 2" x 2" picture. Looks to have 2 knobs on either side of the Chevrolet name and a larger keyed knob ?? below it. What I have is a copy and not really all that clear.

Yes, 1933 was the only year with a key lock. They said the lock was provided so a person could not get into your car, turn on the radio, and kill the battery.

Thanks guys. That sounds like it must be a very rare radio.

The 32 and 33 radios, both required keys to unlock the on/off and volume control.

I realize it was in the 33 Salesman book again and could be installed in previous models. The question was was it available in 32.

The "Bow-Tie" radio was not apparently available until the fall of 1932 in time for the '33 models. Not likely in time for 1932 production.

I dont recall the 33 radios having a remote head? One model had a remote speaker and ine model had an integrated speaker. No remote head. The head may appear to be remote since it is the only part you see and the body is tucked up behind the dash itself.

My '36 Standard, Town Sedan has the mounting hole (wooden frame work)for the speaker under the head liner, center, front just above the windshield. It also has a wire running up their from under the dash, but has never had a speaker or the wire hooked up. It is evident that it was placed there by the factory. This car was made in St. Louis, Mo.
