i see all kinds of universal v8 mounting brackets for my truck (53 5w) but i look under the hood and i don't think a v8 will fit with the steering box in the stock location... i don't really have the time or money to convert the truck over to an ifs system yet, however i do have a small block and a muncie.... but if i buy the mounting kit will it clear my steering box?? if anyone knows i would greatly appreciate any info before i start cramming the motor and tranny in.... thanks a bunch... chev53....

Nope, nothing but problems. You should sell the 53 to a restorer and buy a 60's pickup that already has a V8. bigl

I have done 2 of these and moved the engine slightly to the right to clear the steering box. The V8 in that truck really isn't a good deal. I would consider one of the 250 cubic inch inline Chevrolet 6 cyl engines from the 1966-1984 model Chevrolet trucks. They will bolt up to your "Muncie" and get rid of about 95% of your installation problems. A V8 in that chassis is the classic case of all go and no whoa unless you make serious and expensive changes to the brakes.

You could get one of the GMC 300+ ci engines and invest in some speed equipment and a350 rearend and go as fast as a sane man would drive a 53 straight axle truck, 70 mph probably will run your pucker factor up into the red line area.

well thanks for the input all.... i have been asking around my town and got a few ideas... something floating around in my head involving a lates 70's plymouth front end and a **** nine inch in the rear.. all parts i can come up with easily around here. and by the way mr.mack on a good day, down hill, with an awsome wind my 1953 chev will do 90+. i had to put a gm 12 bolt with 3.08 gears in it and an old 4 speed out of a 65 chev... but that lil 235 will push that truck fast anywhere that isn't up hill....

You should go to www.chevytalk.com or www.stovebolt.com. All this talk of hacking up your grandpa's truck is very disturbing. Its too bad you can't appreciate the original gem you have now.

Going 90+ in a 53 Chevy? It seems unlikely you'll be around to pass the truck to your grandson. togo

I figure my 28 sedan will do about 130mph when rolled out the back cargo bay of a C 130 Herc. too, but what does that prove?

wow... i guess i am just totally in the wrong place here.... i am definitly in love with modern technology and even more so with power and speed. i see the truck having a nice new quiet interior, fuel injection, cruise control, and air conditioning within the next 5 years.. i am terrribly sorry if by not keeping it stock offends anyone, it is a great truck the engine has never been into and it is still a strong runner. it is an awsome machine, but it is also my toy, and i love to play. a straight 6 wont bring home a 12 sec drag slip.

hum... well i don't quite understand the last few replies... it's ok to be blunt. my love for my truck is true and it is mine to change to better suit my personal tastes, even if you all don't share my opinion or idea of fun with style and beauty. thank you for the help and criticism.

Just think. Several years from now you can show the truck to your grandson and say: "Sorry, but that is NOT the way the truck looked when I bought it from my grandfather. Wish I had left it alone so you could see what a truck looked like in the 40's and 50's, but 'IT SHORE GOES FAST NOW'.
