Hello Everyone,

I have the engine from my "white car" as a spare. I was going to take a couple of push rods as spares for the "black car" as part of my emergency kit.

The issue is the push rods are 13 inches long.

The block casting # is........8383101 .........with a 6.....5 below it.

The head casting # is .....838355... (exhaust valves have rotators)

The engine serial # is located before the fuel pump.......646700

The problem is the push rods in the engine I'm running are 10 1/4 inches.

I know from discussing with Chevgene in the past that the current replacement short block is a '37/'38 because the of the casting # and the engine serial # is between the distributor and the starter.

What is the spare engine and why are the push rods so long ?? I know from looking at Cof's catalog that there are different lifters ...but 2 3/4 inch difference in push rod length?!

837101 is a 1937 engine.
The 1937-1939 engines came with the lon push rods and the push rods sat in the bottom of the lifters. (1929-1939 used these same lifters)
In 1940 the push rod was shortened (for less flexing at high speeds) and the push rod sits on top of the lifter.
Thei new style lifter can be used in a 1937-1939 along with the short psh rods.
Infact if you want new lifters today for a 37-39 they will sell you the tall lifter and short push rod.
The valve rotators were an after market "thing" for heavy duty truckk use to extend valve life. Usually used with the much better stellite valves. The do reqire a shortwr valve spring.
I had rotators in my 1939 for a while. I had the tall lifters and short hollow push rods wich also were aftermarket.

Thank you Chevgene.

I'm guessing the "white car" engine is probable all original, meaning it's never been apart.

one question though, is the "837101" # a typo ?

Have a great Thanksgiving Day to you and all of the VCCA family !

Hello Chevgene,

Yes, it appears that I added an extra "3" to the casting number. My bad.
