I'm thinking that it's time to replace the leaking, worn out manual gear on the 55 Chev with a rebuilt manual one.The Shop Manual is very good at explain the procedure but I can't figure out if I need to remove the shifter tube and mast jacket first.Or can I take off steering wheel and pull the gear and shaft out from underneath after removing from pitman arm without disturbing anything else?
Thanks for any help.

Under steering gear removal in the shop manual the first thing it states is "with the mast jacket removed"........
