Hi.
What is the correct torque for the headbolts on the 490 engine?

There is no set torque for the head bolts, but a safe torque would be 55-60 ft. lbs. Anymore than that is risking stripping the threads in the block. If you replaced the head gasket don't forget the aluminum spray on the copper head gasket.

I might even go a little easier than that, I always say 50-55 ft-lbs. I assume you are re-using original head bolts.

Then, when it's all together and running again, you will almost certainly have to re-torque the head bolts a couple of times, after half an hour or so of running time. They "stretch" or relax a bit, and you will find they have dropped to maybe 25 ft lbs, they might even let bubbles out the edges of the head gasket. Just re-torque until they stay at 50.

This is a perfect example of posting a question in several threads. We now have a thread under 12-28 and one here in 16-22. Both with the same question and different answers.

Will see if this can right itself.

I noticed this duplicate thread, too, after I had posted an answer on the other thread.

But it looks to me like we all gave him pretty much the same answer: 50-55 with old bolts, 55-60-65 on new ones.

I don't mean to minimize your main point that there is no need for duplicating the questions, though.

Olle,
you also may ask Per-Ã…ke per-ake.larsson@telia.com about this.
Here he is: https://vccachat.org/ubbthreads.php/users/6244/swedechev
He is really using his 490.
