The front end on my '25 sedan shakes violently when I hit a rut in the road.It looks like the steering connecting rod gets hung up. After about 50 feet it stops and steering is normal. My question is; are there springs behind both end plugs on the steering connecting rod? I removed the end plug at the steering gear third arm ball and there isn't a spring between the end plug and the ball seat. I see the spring at the pitman arm. If there is supposed to be one , then where can I purchase one. I only see kits for 1927 and newer. Any help would be appreciated.

Try adding some wedges to increase the front axle castor.

Check the adjustment of the front wheel bearings. Check the 'toe-in'.

Even if there was general looseness in various components, sufficient castor ought to prevent your steering shimmy.

I got the same advice when my car did the same, add wedges. Too my surprise my car already had wedges, I took them off and it solved the problem. The car never shaked, rattled, etc . again. Wedges or no wedges is the answer.

Were they in the right way? I've never heard of reducing camber to fix a shimmy. It is castor that provides steering self-centering and if you keep adding it, the wheels will become increasing difficult to move away from the straight ahead position. This is why I think they might have been fitted wrongly.

The wedges I had were inserted from the back side of the axle. When I first bought the car (33 years ago) I had no problem. In 1994 in Yellowstone the problem began, the extreme shaking. It continued to get worse in the following years. Then the guys from St. Louis told me to add wedges. When I got home I crawled under the car and discovered I had wedges. I removed them and that solved the problem. Never shook again. If they were in wrong or correct I do not know, I just know removing them solved all my problems.

Wheel alignment issues can be strange sometimes. I would probably have removed them to see what effect it had too !!
