Hello all - I just acquired a 1957 Bel Air convertible with power brakes. There is approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches of travel before the brakes apply. I was just wondering if there is some kind of vacuum problem, etc.? I would not think this is normal. The brakes work well, but it takes pretty good pressure to apply them. Thanks so much for any suggestions you can give me! - The Ol Coach

My '57 power brakes - engine not running, vacuum tank "empty" pedal goes down about 1 1/2".....with engine running, less tha one inch. Very touchy. Requires very little pressure to stop car. Much less than modern car. If pedal travel is excessive may need brake adjustment or fluid.
Before I had my treadlvac unit rebuilt it acted more like what you describe.

Thanks very much for the information, Chev Nut! I have checked the fluid level, but I'll check the adjustment. Thanks again! - The Ol Coach
