Last night we were given a 1968 292 cu in engine that my son wants to put in his 1951 Chevy 4dr sedan.
My question is: Were do we look for an adaptor for the bellhousing, and will the drive shaft have to be shortened?
Thanks in advance, Bob

This is only a thought, a 1948-54 Chevrolet pickup 3 speed transmission is about 5/8 inch shorter than your passenger car transmission. The case from the pickup transmission will bolt to the manual transmission flywheel housing of the later model 230-250-292 6 cyl engines. You could put the guts from your passenger 3-speed into the truck case and use a repair spacer on the back of your transmission which would lengthen the case about 1/2 inch. The only thing that might be a problem is the bushing in the rear of the transmission that the front u-joint yoke runs in, also a rear transmission support may have to be fabricated. But if your're wanting to do this project "Cheap" this would be worth looking into.
