can someone post a picture of the dash of a 1940 sedan without a radio? I want to see what the blanks look like that fill the space without a radio.

Most 1940 Chevrolets without a radio that I have seen come with an ash tray. When running an ash tray, the 2 radio tuner holes have round metal plugs.

The 1940 dealer albumn says all Master Deluxe and Special Deluxe had a ash tra in the radio opening. The Master 85 would have had a knock-out plate. If the radio was installed there was no ash tray in the center of the dash. A door mounted ash tray was available for $1.00. You get also buy a radio opening mounted ash tray for the Master 85 for $1.00. I could not find a picture of the M 85 knock-out plate and am sure they are quite rare.

Thanks to all for your info. Now I know why my car doesn't have an ash tray. My radio is long gone so now I will find an ash tray to fill the hole.

Just looked at the picture of the 1940 radio delete plate and realized that I have one of these. I had thought it was a clock delete plate, but now I know better. This won't fit my '37, so if anyone needs it you can send me a PM. Tom

Alvin - Good to know you filled your dash opening. Turns out that I took my part to the swap meet in Zephyrhills FL last week end and sold it to an older gentleman whose first car was a 1940 Chevrolet Master 85. He said the car is long gone, but he recognized the radio cover plate and bought it just to set on his desk for the memories. A feel good moment!

If anyone needs one I have an extra ash tray and the chrome headed bolts that attach it.
