I am in the process of installing a rear axle ring gear on the differential case. The pilot studs are in place per the manual but the gear will not slide down. On a previous attempt I was able to fit the gear by putting the case in the freezer, but then I learned the case was incorrect. The now correct case is again in the freezer and I was wondering if heating the ring gear would help. If so I have a wood stove I could set the gear on and a thermal gun to monitor the temp. Any suggestions on how much the gear could be heated?

500 degrees will start move molecules. I would stay under that.

Thanks for that info. I was thinking that about 250-275 would be good and still not too hot to handle.

The heat and cool process worked fine. It slipped right over the five guide studs with only a light tap. Secured it down with NEW lock washers and Loctite and now just need to finish the re-assembly of gears etc.
