I have 2 Oil trough pipe gauges, Kent Moore J969 and J969-1A
The J969 is marked 1937
The J969-1A has no date

The only difference I see is the J969-1A has better locating pins for aligning the tool to the oil pan.

Does anyone know the years and application for the J969-1A?

I may be interested in selling one of them, as well as other duplicate tools, mainly for 37 and later vehicles.

The J-969 is mentioned in the 1939, 1942 and 1953 shop manuals. No "A" is mentioned. I would suspect it is an improved model of the 969.

J-969 is the Kent Moore number for the Entire Oil Nozzle Checking Tool Set which also includes J 969-2 and J-969-3.

The Oil Target Gage is J-969-1

Yes, these tools began in 1937 with the introduction of the 216 cubic inch engine.

I am looking for a J-969-2 for my set.

That is correct, J-969 is for the entire set. Since I don't have my later year Kent Moore catalogs here I could use help on the following:

I have 2 different oil pan trough depth gauges
J-969-2A which I assume is for 1937 and later 216s, with the A indicating a revised version of the tool.
J-1646-A is the other, maybe for a 235? This one is slightly longer and taller than the other...about 1/8" in all directions.

Both have a small rectangular 3/16 x 2 in piece of flat-stock metal riveted to the center of the tool, right where the rod dipper would pass through. I assume that if the dipper hits this riveted piece, the dipper is too low in the trough, but if it doesn't hit it it is too high in the trough...essentially a "go or no go, or pass/fail" feature.

Can someone confirm the year an application of these tools?

To complete the J-969 set, I have 2 J-969-3 oil line nozzle depth gauges. They are a reproduction I had made from an original.

Finally, I have 2 J-793-5 oil trough pipe qualifying tools, which I use to bend or align the pipes/nozzles if needed. Is that the correct use of this tool?

My Kent-Moore catalogs (1939 & 1944 editions) state that the J 793 Oil Nozzle Checking Tool set is for 1935-36 Chevrolet passenger cars & trucks and consists of the following:

J 793-1 Target guage
J 793-2 Line setting wrench
J 793-3 Faucet assembly
J 793-4 Depth guage

The catalogs make no mention of any J 793-5 tool.
