Hi,I'm new to this post, & had a tech question about engine paint for a 1958 Chevrolet truck 283 V-8.I'm currently in the process of rebuilding the engine, its all very original & matching numbers. I purchased a few cans of engine gray paint from the filling station, which they say was used on Chevrolet trucks thru 1962.After painting the engine block & valve covers it seems to be more of a charcoal gray or a very darker gray than I've seen in books & other pictures. Most of what I've seen is a lighter gray with black scripted valve covers (which I like). I'm trying to make this,as original as possible,so can anyone tell me what might be correct, including if the valve covers were scripted & the color for the bell housing & manual transmission. any advise would be greatly appreciated !!

The scripts were not painted. Even the scripts on the car orange engine were not painted in 1958.
The transmission was not painted.
The bell housing and its covers were assembled to the engine when it was painted and are engine color.
The manifolds were bolted to the heads and painted engine color. The top long generator adjusting bracket is engine color.
The engine was gray and perhaps not quite as dark as the FS gray.

No but you could go to a farm type store and check out the gray engine paints.
