The accessory book shows the antenna that goes over the top of a 38 chevrolet. It has a metal bracket in the middle of the top that supports it.Has anyone ever seen this rare accessory?...Photos?

Yes, it looks like a fishing pole tied to the roof of the car. Was available from 1936-1939.

Great picture of the antenna.
But speaking of rare accessories, what can you tell me about the front side mount spare tire? I have a 1937 with dual front side mounts and have only seen the "welled" fenders listed in Canadian parts books, not US books. I have not found a listing for 1938 front "welled" fenders for US models either. My car was assembled in Janesville, WI.
Does that car have dual front side mount spare tires?

Steve's been dreaming of a side mount for some time but I think he finally decided it'll be too difficult, requiring too many changes to his stock car. A recent thread on the subject.

I just found on the Barrett Jackson Website a 39 pontiac with the whip type antenna. There is a good photo. It is lot # 850 for the auction coming up this week. Here is the link. Barrett Jackson lot 850

That is not and Pontiac did not offer the Chevrolet roof top antenna. That is only a long whip (straight) type antenna tied down. The conventional cowl side antenna was refered to as a whip antenna.

Wow, that is certainly a optioned-out 1939 Master Deluxe sport sedan in the photo above! Very impressive. Does anyone know the story on the sidemounted spare? I've never seen a sidemount on a '39 before - was that offered by the factory or has that car been customized to add it?
Just curious.
On the rooftop antenna, I saw one of those years ago on a VERY nice '38 sedan at the 1991 Anniversary Meet in Nasville, TN. They're shown in the accessory books but that's the only one I've ever actually seen. Interesting!

All 1939 station wagons came with a right side side mount. It also required a special foldding side hood for the hood to clear the spare when opening. The car pictured looks to have the original fixed hood side. Would then be necessary to remove wheel and tire to open hood.

I guess I misspoke earlier. I did see sidemounted spare tires on the few 1939 station wagons (aka, woodies) that I've seen, but never on a '39 sedan like in the picture above.
I guess I'm still curious if that option was offered on coupes and sedans by the Chevy factory or if the pictured car has been customized. The lack of a special hood like came on the '39 station wagons makes me think it's not factory.

A side mount was not available from Chevrolet on non-wagon models.....all wagons had a side mount and a double hinged hood.

1938 chevrolets had a side mount if it was shipped to countries that had extremely rough terrain. I've seen photos of India,S.Africa,Norway and Pakistan. They also had a larger center crossmember that the driveshaft and exhaust went thru. I posted several photos of these cars in the past. I'd love to have the sparetire mounting hardware(extremely rare).

Steve, just take a couple weeks and go to Pakistan and get a set. While your at it being me a set also. Nothing would make our 38s look better.

I found a complete 38 coupe (ragged) in S.Africa for sale, it had a sidemount spare, no price just a phone number. Dutch website http://australia.motoseller.com/c/sys.php?a=2&b=14943Check out the front fender running lights. Almost all 38s I've seen on overseas websites have this type running lights. Very odd

The ad was posted in 2008, but it could still be for sale.
